Heyo, spudwalt here. I'm back on the new site!

I'm still fairly new to the whole Dungeon Crawl thing -- I've only been playing since Version .10 -- but I've been having a lot of fun with it. I've only ascended once, though, with Bessie the Minotaur Fighter with 5 runes.

Significant runs so far:

Bunyan the Cleaver, Minotaur Berserker

I started off fairly well, and managed not to die to anything in the early dungeon. As I proceeded, I continued to perform well. Sigmund stood in my way, and I crushed him. Ijyb, Crazy Yiuf, Menkaure, and Eustachio soon followed.

As my journey continued, I grew in power and confidence, demolishing everything that stood in my path. I conquered the Sewers and the Bailey, finding a couple of handy dwarven hand axes of returning in the latter. Dowan, Duvessa, Edmund, and a couple of ghost Demigods all fell before me. I also began finding artifacts, like the +1 short sword of Hyakhluh (freezing, see invisible). Most of them were fairly useless, but they were rare artifacts all the same.

I cut my way through the Orcish Mines in a whirlwind of death, with the aid of a +6/+5 ring of slaying I found and a +4/+0 battleaxe of chopping an orc warrior kindly donated to my cause. Gastronok, Nergalle, Nessos, and Sonja all fell before my blade. Soon afterward, I received a wondrous gift from Trog: a +3/+7 antimagic executioner's axe.

With this axe, I knew that while I was not invincible, I could still make even mighty foes quiver in terror before dying swiftly. Orcs, ogres, fungal colonies, even the occasional troll... None of them stood before me for long. I had plate armor, conservation, poison resistance, several helpful wands, and that lovely executioner's axe. I had it all going my way.

And then an orc knight on Orc:4 landed a (un)lucky hit with a battleaxe of distortion, hurling me into the Abyss. Barely three hundred turns later, I was nibbled to death by a swarm of insubstantial wisps after running afoul of some hellwings.

All that just goes to show how quickly your fortunes can change in Dungeon Crawl. I might have managed to survive the Abyss if I had focused on running instead of trying to fight the new enemies I was seeing, but maybe I was doomed from the start. Who knows? That's the fun, challenge, and frustration of Dungeon Crawl, all in one.

And these aren't even all the artifacts I've found -- I lost track of a bunch of them from around when I first started playing, and I lost a buttload more when my account timed out and deleted my changes.
